The DVCAM format uses a 15 micron track pitch, 8-bit component digital recording on a ME tape with 5:1
compression and 4:1:1 color sampling to provide a superior picture quality, superb multi-generation
capability and production flexibility. Audio is locked to the video. The DVCAM format is available in two
cassette sizes, Mini and Standard.
The consumer DV format uses a 10 micron track pitch, 8-bit component digital recording on a ME tape with
5:1 compression and 4:1:1 color sampling. Audio is not locked to the video. The DV format is available in
two cassette sizes, Mini and Standard. The DSR-250 can record or play both DVCAM and *DV. The
camcorder can record the DV format in the SP mode only. *IMPORTANT!
The transition from cut to cut may not be smooth when recorded in the DV format. In between scenes where the recording format is changed
from DV to DVCAM, or vice versa, the transition may not be smooth. This is a normal and expected phenomenon. Audio dubbing is not
possible when recorded in the DV format.
Maximum Record Times available on DV/DVCAM cassettes:
DV Mini cassette:
Up to 60 minutes in DV mode
Up to 40 minutes in DVCAM mode
DV Standard cassette:
Up to 180 minutes in DV mode
Up to 119 minutes in DVCAM mode
DVCAM Mini cassette:
Up to 60 minutes in DV mode
Up to 40 minutes in DVCAM mode
DVCAM Standard cassette:
Up to 276 minutes in DV mode
Up to 184 minutes in DVCAM mode
The DSR-250 has three 1/3" IT (Interline Transfer) CCD's with 380,000 pixels to help deliver accurate color
reproduction. Both interlace scan, for moving images, and progressive scan, for still images can be
recorded.
Connectivity to or from most video equipment is possible. The DSR-250 has analog composite in and out
as well as Y/C (S-Video) in and out. A digital 6-pin i-Link (IEEE-1394) I/O is also built in. Two balanced XLR
(line/mic/mic phantom), as well as two RCA (line level) audio inputs are available.
In order to reduce the amount of equipment needed for a shoot, the camcorder has a built in monitor. A
200K dot (880x228), 2.5" precision LCD is built in to the rear (operators side) of the DSR-250. The monitor
is a color, TFT active matrix LCD that allows the operator to stand away from the camcorder while shooting,
in order to reduce the eye strain commonly experienced from using a viewfinder for an extended period.
Since both, the viewfinder and the monitor will operate at the same time, the operator can use the
viewfinder while the client or producer watch the shot on the LCD. Menu settings and audio levels can also
be superimposed over the displayed LCD image.
A DXF-801 Class viewfinder with 600 lines of horizontal resolution is standard with the DSR-250. The CRT
is a 1.5" B/W, very similar to the DXC-D35 standard viewfinder. The viewfinder has a Lens Light, to
illuminate the rear of the lens in conditions with poor ambiant light.
The Built in lens has an extremly high optical quality. The optical zoom ratio is 12:1. An incredible zoom ratio
of 24:1 or 48:1 can also be obtained in the digital zoom mode. Filters with a 58mm thread can screw directly
to the front of the lens.
Focus control can be set to Manual or with the touch of one button, Auto.
Zoom control can be used manually or powered with the zoom rocker control.
The new and improved Super Steady Shot feature can be used to help maintain the quality of an "odd
angle" shot. The operator can obtain a steady shot even when shooting out of the window of a moving
vehicle. The Super Steady Shot feature will Optically steady the shot by "floating" the lens elements to keep
them level at all times.
Two White Balance settings can be saved. This feature is very useful when shooting interior and exterior
shots during the same day.
ATW (Auto Trace White Balance) enables the white balance setting to change automatically according to
lighting conditions. White balance will change quickly and undetected even when moving from an interior lit
with practicals to an exterior lit with the noon day sun.
Time Code with setable Hours/Minutes/Seconds/Frames is available. Time Code can also be set to Rec
Run or Free Run. Free Run Time Code is very useful when shooting an event such as a concert, with
multiple cameras. In post production, the Time Code from different cameras can be compared to determine
exactly when the same shot was taken from different angles. User bits (U-bit) are also available to allow the
operator to ID the camera with alphanumeric data.
Still images can be captured in JPEG with a Memory Stick. A Memory Stick is a small card, about the size of
a stick of gum, that slides into the camcorder and stores still images at 640 x 480 resolution. Up to 988
JPEG still images can be stored on a single 64MB Memory Stick. The information stored on the Memory
Stick can then be downloaded into a PC to be manipulated with a paint program or used in an e-mail, via
the optional MSAC-PC2 PCMCIA card adaptor. An entire story board can be e-mailed to your client for
immediate approval after the days shooting is complete.
Full DSP (Digital Signal Processing) is available to the user. The benefit of DSP is to fully control the
adjustable parameters of the camcorder. Digital matrix adjustments allow the user to exactly match multiple
camcorders for certain unique color requirements. These settings can be stored and recalled at a later
time.
A Time/Date Stamp can be inserted into the lower third of the image, in order to permanently document the
exact time and date that the shot was acquired. This feature is a requirement when shooting legal
depositions.
The DSR-250 has many features that can be controlled manually, such as :
Zoom: optical 12:1, digital 24:1 or 48:1
Focus: switchable to auto
Iris: with lens ring
Shutter Speed: 1/4 to 1/10,000 sec
Gain: H,M,L
White Balance: Preset, A, B
ND Filter: 1/4 & 1/32
Custom Presets: Color Level, Sharpness, WB, AGC
Digital Effects: Still, Flash Motion, Luminance Key, Trail, Old Movie
Audio Record Level: Ch 1, Ch 2, Mix
Zebra: 100%, 70%
The Tape Title feature allows the operator to add a visual slate to the tape during the first five seconds of
recording. This feature is very useful when logging footage from multiple tapes.
The DSR-250 uses the Sony "V-mount" battery system. The BP-L40, BP-L60, and BP-L90 Lithium-Ion
batteries will mount directly to the back of the camcorder. With a power consumption of only 10.5W, a single
BP-L90 will power the camcorder for about nine hours. If you prefer Anton Bauer's battery system, an
optional QR-DSR Gold Mount is available.
Five Fader Modes are available in the DSR-250:
Black Fade (In/Out)
Monotone Fade (fade from B&W to color)
Overlap (last image becomes a still image and overlaps into the new scene)
Wipe
DOT (picture brakes up into dots and dissipates)
The DSR-250 has a 4:3 chip set built in. The image that is processed on this chip set can be electronically
processed into a 16:9 aspect image.
After five minutes of inactivity, the tape will be automatically released from the drum in order to protect it from
damage.
A standard 4-pin XLR type DC input is located at the rear of the camcorder.
A DC 12V output is built in to supply power to an on camera light (30W max). Power is supplied through a
two pin power tap connector.
The DSR-250 can be used as an edit player or recorder. Input and output signals can be transmited
through the i.Link cable to control the camcorder as a deck.
The DSR-250 can record two channels of 48kHz/16 bit or 32kHz/12 bit audio. *On a pre-recorded tape with
two channels recorded in the 32kHz/12 bit mode, it can dub an additional two channels through the external
mic input.
