The Elura 40MC uses a 680,000-pixel CCD to capture high quality video images, XGA High Resolution Photos, and Motion JPEG movies. There is no need to carry both video and photo cameras with the Elura 40MC.
Canon's image stabilization system corrects camera shake: for example, hand-held shots, at full telephoto, and shots taken from a moving car are smoother and steadier.
The Elura 40MC sports a 10X optical zoom lens combined with a 200X digital zoom. This zoom range will more than take care of all your picture-taking needs, whether it's wide-angle shots of all the family at the reunion, or close-up sports action at full telephoto. Combine this zoom with the high-resolution capability of DV and you have high quality video at your fingertips.
You can save both video and digital still images to the Elura 40MC's tape cassette, and high resolution still images as well as Motion JPEG to its MultiMediaCard or SD Memory Card.
Video Mode - Video Mode delivers smooth full-motion video for playback on your TV. You also can transfer the video onto your computer to view, edit, post on the Internet, or send to friends. Its advanced circuitry ensures that color, light, and motion of the scene are recorded with exceptional accuracy and superior color rendition.
Digital Photo Mode - You can make your Elura 40MC a still camera by switching to Photo Mode. Just press the photo button to capture more than 700 still pictures on a single videocassette (in SP mode).
XGA High Resolution Photos - Using advanced dual image processing the Elura 40MC captures beautiful, high-definition photos. Just press the photo button to capture up to 40 stunning XGA (1024 x 768 pixel) images onto the included 8MB SD Memory card.
Motion JPEG - Designed to help you make web videos, Motion-JPEG mode produces compressed AVI files that are smaller and easier to run and send by email than conventional video files. Record a 10 second clip at 320 X 240 or a 30 second clip at 160 X 120.
Multimedia Card and SD Memory Card Compatible
For the storage of digital still images and Motion JPEG movies. You can use either MultiMediaCards or SD Memory Cards with the Elura 40MC. An 8Mb SD Memory Card comes with the camcorder, storing up to 39 XGA High Resolution Photos or 86 digital photos, or Motion JPEG movies.
Color Viewfinder and 2' LCD Screen
The Elura 40MC offers both a color viewfinder and a 2-inch fold-out color LCD screen. For those who prefer a larger screen for composing videos, the fold-out screen makes it easy. Because it twists and can be flipped, you can shoot your video from any angle without having to look in the viewfinder. The screen also is great for sharing video with others just after you've captured a scene.
Direct Print
With Canon's Direct Print capability, you can make high quality color prints directly from the Elura 40MC without having to use a computer. Simply connect a single cable from the Elura 40MC to the optional Canon CP-10 Card Photo Printer and you have a portable printing lab. The CP-10 makes credit-card sized (300 dpi X 300 dpi) color prints in less than a minute. You can even specify the quantity and style (bordered or borderless) directly from the Elura 40MC's menu. For added fun and flexibility, the CP-10 prints full-size labels or 8 mini-labels.
Exif Print
The Canon Elura 40MC conforms to 'Exif Print', a worldwide standard Canon has committed to implement. Vital camera settings (such as: exposure mode, white balance, exposure time) and scene data are recorded to the image file when it is captured. Printers compatible with 'Exif Print' are able to use this information to produce high quality photographs, exactly the way they were intended at the time of capture. This intelligent communication process also allows the printer to correct for poor lighting or mistakes, resulting in photos which can be even better than the originals. 'Exif Print' guarantees realistic and reliable color reproduction.
Programmed Auto Exposure

The Elura 40MC offers the versatility to meet all exposure challenges, and ease of use when you're happy to let the camera make all the choices. Amazingly sophisticated circuitry delivers proper exposure automatically under almost any lighting condition. But you also can easily adjust the exposure system in any one of several creative ways to meet specific needs. Selecting a different exposure mode lets you control how you want the video to look.
Manual Controls
For those who want total control of all aspects of the exposure system, Elura 40MC offers Manual Mode. You can select the shutter speed and aperture settings for full creative control.

Digital Effects, Faders and Special Effects
Digital Effects - The Elura 40MC gives you the opportunity to play with what you've made. For that creative touch, a more appealing look, or greater imaging variety, you can switch on one of several digital effects, including art, black & white picture, sepia, mosaic, ball, cube, wave, color mask or mirror.
Digital Faders -The Elura 40MC gives you three picture fade options to start or end scenes, with a fade to or from black: Fade Trigger, Wipe, corner, jump, flip, puzzle, zigzag and tide.
Special Effects - Two additional special effects can be added during recording: Card Mix and Multi-image Screen.
PCM Digital Stereo Sound

The Elura 40MC can record sound in two audio modes:
16-bit (48 kHz, 2 channels) for the highest sound quality, slightly better than CD quality, and equivalent to DAT tape;
12-bit (32 kHz, 2 from 4 channels) for recording on two channels (stereo 1), leaving two channels (stereo 2) open for post production audio recording (narration, music, etc.).
IEEE 1394 Input/Output Terminal
The Elura 40MC is designed for the transfer of digital video and audio to and from either a PC or another IEEE�1394 terminal-equipped camcorder or professional DV VCR. The DV terminal allows high quality transfer with virtually no deterioration in quality of images. You can edit and process images by connecting the camera to a PC with the IEEE�1394 terminal. As well, you can add new sound to original sound or replace original sound and images on a previously-recorded tape.
Video and Audio Inputs and Outputs
Audio Inputs - The analog audio inputs of the Elura 40MC let you perform dubbing or insert editing from conventional audio sources such as CDs, cassettes, microphones or the soundtracks of other videocassettes.

Audio Outputs - Audio (and video) on a MiniDV cassette can be output to another camcorder or VCR.
Video Inputs and Outputs - The Elura 40MC is designed to handle two types of analog video input and output: using audio/video cables (composite) or by using an S-video cable.
By using audio/video cables (composite) or S-Video, it's possible to send an analog video signal from your TV, VCR or a camcorder into the Elura 40MC and record it onto DV. Similarly, you can output an analog signal via composite or S-Video cables to an analog device such as a TV or VCR.
